The link below is to an article published by TES Scotland on 13 May 2024, emerging from the early stages of our research project. In this article, we explore forms of participation within the National Discussion and critically analyse the political response to it.
We ask, and reflect on, the following questions:
- What did participation look like?
- To what extent were teachers’ voices heard?
- To what extent has the National Discussion been acted on?
We conclude by positioning the National Discussion as a positive model that could be built on within future reform efforts.
“For us, the National Discussion represented an extraordinary shift towards a more democratic model of policymaking, which had the potential to create the kind of spaces where the voices of the teaching profession could genuinely inform change… It is crucial that the potential here is not lost – the future of Scottish education depends on it”.
